What is a promise worth without a guarantee?

Someone might stake their life on a dangerous task yet refuse to promise lasting love. Death can settle one debt. No sacrifice can assure affection or repay its loss.

If a person's word is all they believe they own, breaking it could feel like becoming worthless. Is keeping it integrity, or a need to leave no debt unpaid?

Refusing an uncertain promise could protect someone from false hope. It could also deny them the right to accept that uncertainty. Can commitment mean honest effort rather than guaranteed feelings?
